From Skyscrapers to Sunflowers: My NYC-to-Upstate Flower Shop Journey

I'm Romane, crazy French lady who decided to move Upstate NY and start a flower farm after years of living in the city and ZERO gardening experience.

I'm one of those people that can get pretty obsessed about something, and once the flower gate was opened, there was no turning back. It was all I could think about, day in, day out. I’m talking watching 58 season of “gardeners world”, a show that would definitely not qualify as "cool" by millennials standard… Trading my novels for books on soil health and pests management and planning abroad vacation solely to visit gardens on my bucket list. And no, I'm not 80yo, I just have the hobbies of a grandma!

One day I decided if I was going to go on living, I NEEDED a flower farm!

I got to work and quickly turned the bare earth into rows and rows of snapdragons, cosmos and dahlias. I was hooked!

Just when I thought "this is it!", I discovered a new obsession that never ever in my life I’d have thought to like: designing with all those flowers!

I’m not going to lie, one day a friend told me a her dream job was to be a florist and I clearly remember thinking a judgemental “Eww, why on earth?”.

Oops... Sometimes life surprises you.

Now 4 years into this journey, I do workshops, weddings all over the Hudson Valley and NYC, and just opened my own flower shop!

I'd love to hear about YOUR flower journey!

Do you grow flowers or want to? Do you love arranging or having fresh flowers in the house? What's the earliest memory you have of flowers?

Romane
