5 Irresistible Reasons Why You Should Grow Dahlias

Oh dahlias,

I started with 5 dahlias my first year and now grow over 800 each year! Do I have a problem? Possibly. Do I regret it? Absolutely not. And if you’re not already growing dahlias, here’s why you should immediately hop on this slightly obsessive yet highly rewarding train:

1. The More You Cut, the More They Bloom

Dahlias are like that one overachiever in school—give them a little attention, and they’ll keep producing more. Snip a few blooms, and they’ll reward you with a never-ending floral encore. Seriously, you could have fresh flowers every week, and your plants will just keep saying, “Oh, you like that? Here’s more!”

2. There’s a Dahlia for Everyone

Big, small, frilly, spiky, neon pink, deep burgundy—these flowers come in so many shapes and colors that even the pickiest plant person will find the one. I’d bet my entire dahlia stash (which is basically my life's work at this point) that you’ll fall in love with at least one variety. Probably ten.

3. The Best ROI in the Garden

Dahlias multiply like they’re trying to take over the world. Plant one, and next year, you’ll have five. It’s like a pyramid scheme, but one where everyone wins. Learn to divide them properly, and soon you’ll be handing out tubers to friends like party favors.

4. They’re Almost Too Easy to Grow

Think you don’t have a green thumb? Think again. Dahlias don’t need coddling. I don’t fertilize them, I don’t pamper them, and yet they still deliver buckets of blooms. If only everything in life were this low-maintenance.

5. They Add Instant Garden Drama

Want a flower that stops people in their tracks? Dahlias have that covered. From petite border varieties to dinner plate dahlias the size of your face, they’re guaranteed to make your neighbors wonder if you secretly have a professional gardening team. Spoiler: You don’t. You just discovered the magic of dahlias.

So go ahead, plant some dahlias. Just be warned: it starts with five, and before you know it, you’ll be explaining to your family why you need an entire field for “just a few more.”
